Massive abroad employment for hospitality & catering personnel
The domestic jobs offer in the HoReCa sector (chefs, pastry chefs, receptionists, chambermaids, waiters/waitresses head waiter/waitresses, confectioners, as well as hotel manager, bistro manager, economists) is huge.
"Most jobs are for Bucharest and abroad, as well as for cities like Brasov, Iasi, Timisoara, Constanta", stresses Maria Suciu, PR of Neogen, administrating company of the web site www.bestjobs.ro.
However, a significant number of HoReCa personnel are keen to work abroad, where the wages are more tempting. Whereas the domestic market provides for a 800 RON salary to a waiter, the international market offer is more generous, reaching up 1,000 Euro. “The salary expectances are at least double or triple, in addition to the accommodation and meals provided. One should also realistically consider the overtime work. Compared to our employers, the foreign ones do really pay the overtime.” emphasizes Marian Zamfir, recruitment manager of Knightsbridge International Recruitment Ro.
Workplace qualification
In this respect, the “thorny” problem the HoReCa employers have to deal with resides in “the shortage of qualified, motivated, respectful and honest staff”, stresses Patrick Pettenuzzo, managing director of www.jobresthotel.com,
Due to the shortage of experienced and well qualified personnel, the employers must hire inexperienced individuals who follow to be workplace qualified. The new employees are either sent to gain both qualification and experience or to attend training courses within the hiring company. Andrei Petrescu, the managing director of Confort and Rhin hotels from Otopeni area, explains: "All the new-comers benefit of extensive training courses during the probation period. They work under direct supervision of a qualified and experienced employee. For instance, at the reception desk there are 2 experienced employees and a new one. The acquiring period depends upon each individual’s capacity".
Yet, the human resources professionals argue that lots of employers incepted the “theft of qualified and experienced staff” by offering very tempting wages, a well-known “policy” endorsed by industry branches as banks, marketing or media.
The profile of candidate
Given that the experienced and qualified people leave the country for better salaries, the hotel employers, in particular, seek to hire individuals with public relation abilities.
The optimum profile of a HoReCa employee, as described by Patrick Pettenuzzo, would be: "A skilled HoReCa employee should have a very good knowledge of the working place, should handle properly any conversation in posing pertinent questions and, also, should prove he/she is a real professional. The team spirit is important, it’s essential to smile, to behave professional and to support the colleagues in any work related endeavour".
Romanians working abroad fully accomplish their job tasks and duties
In order to apply for an international job you should comply with the following requirements: to have the proper qualification, experience (at least one year for waiter steward) and a good English knowledge. “Romanians do generally fulfil these requirements. Moreover, the majority does successfully accomplish the tasks related to the foreign job", stresses Marian Zamfir.
Laura Chilom, senior consultant of www.ejobs.ro, assesses that Romanians are dully appreciated abroad for “their language skills and basic qualification apprehended in the resort domestic schools”. For foreign contracts, one can address inquiry to Palmer Consult, Eurojobs Romania, Morrigan Consultants & Advisors, Jobconsulting, Knightsbridge International Recruitment Ro.
